Jeff and Jenni's 36th Wedding Anniversary

at Palm Beach
It is the day before our anniversary and we have checked into this 1920's pub right opposite the waterfront on the Pittwater side of Palm Beach. : anniversary no 36
1
It was a 55 minute drive from our place to Palm Beach.
2
This is right opposite the pub. Being the middle of winter, it was quite cold - about 16°. : anniversary no 36
3
Dani Barrett wanted to do something for us for our anniversary; she called the Boat House restaurant and told them to give us whatever we wanted and to put it on her tab. : anniversary no 36
4
We had a bowl of prawns and a plate of fish and chips. : anniversary no 36
5
It started to rain so everyone who was outside tried to find room inside. It was all good-natured though and I got to chat with a woman from Scotland who had been in Australia for just two days. : anniversary no 36
6
We had lunch at the boathouse - "world famous" for its fresh seafood. : anniversary no 36
7
It stopped raining long enough for me to take a photo from the boathouse looking north. : anniversary no 36
8
It is a fairly nondescript looking place but it does not need to be otherwise - its reputation is built on serving fresh fresh seafood. : anniversary no 36
9
The rain clears and we go around to the ocean side of Palm Beach. : anniversary no 36
10
The beach is empty save for a few hardy souls. The lighthouse is visible on the headland - we go there tomorrow. : anniversary no 36
11
After lunch we walk along the beach on the Pittwater side. : anniversary no 36
12
The Norfolk Island pines flourish in the clean air. : anniversary no 36
13
We were invited to Dani and Mike Barrett's "charming little cottage" for dinner. : anniversary no 36
14
Inside is decorated in the Bavarian state colours of blue and white (as was their previous house, and the one before that, and etc.) : anniversary no 36
15
Night arrived at about 5pm and I dragged Dani to the computer to bore her with the pictures we took last year in Bavaria. : anniversary no 36
16
Jenni fixed some Pasta while Dani and I browsed the web site. : anniversary no 36
17
It is next morning, our anniversary day, and we have had breakfast at the pub. We think about doing a short ferry ride and go to the wharf to look at the timetables. Too windy, too cold we decided. : anniversary no 36
18
That is our pub - we enjoyed our stay here very much. The beautiful Norfolk Island Pine must be 100 years old. : anniversary no 36
19
Instead of a ferry ride, we decide to walk to the lighthouse. : anniversary no 36
20
By now the predicted gale force winds had arrived. Look at the leaves bending in the wind. : anniversary no 36
21
It was incredibly windy. : anniversary no 36
22
As we started the climb, a little girl of about 6 or 7 decided that this was not for her. Her feet were sore, she had sand in her shoes, it was unfair, she hated the wind, turn around and go back. When we got to the top of the hill she was still sobbing her sorrows and she never let up. Her mother handled her with great good humour. It was very funny. : anniversary no 36
23
It was a long steep climb to get to the lighthouse - perhaps ¾ hour with lots of panting stops. : anniversary no 36
24
It was very nice at the top and it appears that the lighthouse is still operational. : anniversary no 36
25
Every day a man climbs to the top of the lighthouse and fills a container with whale oil to provide the illumination. : anniversary no 36
26
Whales go up and down the coast, to the south to feed during summer and to the north to make love during winter. : anniversary no 36
27
The Pacific Ocean looking towards New Zealand. The wind has made the sea very choppy. : anniversary no 36
28
Palm beach golf course is situated on the spit. Ocean side to the left, Pittwater and the Kuringai Chase National Park to the right. : anniversary no 36
29
Houses here are among Australia's most expensive. : anniversary no 36
30
The panorama. Hard to believe this is only 45 kms north of the city. : anniversary no 36
31
Jenni takes refuge from the wind. : anniversary no 36
32
The boathouse where we had lunch yesterday is on the RH edge of the picture. Some hardy souls are on the beach. : anniversary no 36
33
Time to walk back down and have lunch. The high wall protects the lighthouse keeper from the elements. : anniversary no 36
34
At the bottom of the hill at last, we walk back along the beach. The high winds are sailboard heaven. : anniversary no 36

By the time we got back to the hotel, it was time for lunch. Because of the wind we sat inside. : anniversary no 36
43
For starters, Jenni had pate and I had oysters. : anniversary no 36
44
My main was a seafood platter and Jenni had fish and chips again that she said were just as good as those at lunch yesterday. : anniversary no 36
45
I eventually figured out that I was supposed to remove the shell first. : anniversary no 36
46
And where were we on this day 12 months ago? In a little town in the Black Forest called Calw, right here, having lunch. : 2010-07-05 Black Forest
47
And our 35th anniversary dinner? In Romanswiller, Alsace enjoying a special anniversary dinner that Michele had made for us. THE END Return to the home page : 2010-07-05 Black Forest
